Encounter with Pumas ::

Although attacks are always possible, the attack of a puma is almost an improbable event.  Other animals may also attack.
Pumas may attack people only if they see themselves cornered. They do this as a defense mechanism.
Consider the following pieces of advices:

  • When you walk in wild protected areas, do this activity in group (no less than three people). If you are driving and a puma is crossing the road, do not get out from your car, do not follow it.  Take a picture or film it from the car.
  • A pair of wooden sticks may be very useful to walk.  Make sure that children always stay by you all the time.  Advice them about the pumas and teach them to recognize this predator.
  • If it is necessary, look for fast exits.
  • If you find a puma unexpectedly, do not approach if it is eating or feeding its cubs.  Most of them avoid the encounter and run away.
  • Stop, get back slowly but only if you can do it safely. ¡Never Run!
  • Do everything what you can to make as much noise as you can, blast on the horn, hit metallic eating utensils.  If there are children, protect them taking from their arms so they cannot panic and run away.
