Description ::

The National Park Torres del Paine is located in Torres del Paine commune, province of Ultima Esperanza, Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica.  It was created on May 13th, 1959 and is part of the National System of Wild Areas Protected by the Chilean Government.

It was declared Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO on April 28th, 1978. This means that it became part of the different representative ecosystem zones in the world, which are seen as patterns to measure the impacts caused by man in the environment.

Legal surface which corresponds to 181,414 hectares and the administrative surface of 227,298 hectares.  In the 1998 Treat with Argentina, the border was modified in the Dickson area.

Within the limits of a private terrain in the National Park (Cerro Paine Ranch), where the cattle management is still a tradition together with a growing tourist industry through the building of hostels, shelters and camping-sites.
